When the Supernatural Manifests Itself

Parashah Balak

Numbers 22:2 – 25:9

Have you ever heard of an animal speaking? That is one of the reasons this Torah portion is so fascinating and unusual, because that is exactly what happened to the prophet Balaam. Let’s take a closer look.

Balak is the Torah portion found in Numbers 22 through 25. It centers on Balak, king of Moab, who became fearful of Israel’s growing numbers and military victories. Convinced that he could not defeat them by conventional means, he sought the help of Balaam, a prophet renowned for his ability to pronounce blessings and curses, hoping to weaken Israel through spiritual means.

The relationship between these two men drives the narrative. Enticed by Balak’s promise of honor and great wealth, Balaam finds himself torn between personal gain and obedience to the instructions he receives from Yehovah. As he travels toward Moab, he encounters a series of divine interventions, including the remarkable account of his donkey speaking after seeing the Angel of Yehovah standing in the road.

This portion highlights powerful themes of obedience, spiritual discernment, and the absolute sovereignty of the Most High. Despite Balak’s repeated efforts to bring a curse upon Israel, every attempt is transformed into a blessing, demonstrating that no human scheme can overturn the purposes of Yehovah or thwart His plans for His people.

This story teaches us several valuable lessons. First, it reminds us of the importance of emunah (faith) and trust in Yehovah, especially in times of difficulty and danger. It also highlights the need for integrity and honesty, as Balaam, despite his initial intentions, ultimately obeys Yehovah’s Word and utters the words He commands him to say. Furthermore, the intervention of Balaam’s donkey teaches us to be sensitive to the signs and manifestations of the Almighty, which can come from the most unexpected sources. In summary, the parashah of Balak invites us to reflect on the sovereignty of our Father, His protection of His people, and the importance of acting with integrity and obedience to His commandments.

Exhortation: Let us be humble before the Creator and not allow our stubbornness to reach such a point that Yehovah has to speak to us through a donkey!
