Leviticus 9:1 - 11:47
Parashah Sh'mini

Yehovah’s standars demand precision and reverence

Faithful submission that separates the holy from the common.

A Brief Insight

This portion records the eighth day of the Tabernacle’s inauguration, when Aharon begins his priestly service and the glory of Yehovah appears before the people. Offerings are presented exactly as commanded, and divine fire consumes them, confirming that Yehovah accepts what is done according to His word. Immediately after, Nadab and Abihu bring unauthorized fire and are consumed, revealing that approaching the Most High on human terms leads to judgment. Aharon remains silent, recognizing the righteousness of Yehovah. Instructions follow for the priests: they must remain sober, discerning between the holy and the common, and teaching the people accordingly. The focus then shifts to dietary instructions, defining which animals are clean and unclean. These distinctions are not arbitrary but are meant to shape a people set apart. The central message is clear: Yehovah is holy, and those who draw near must honor His standards with precision, reverence, and disciplined living.

TORAH | LEV. 9:1 - 11:47

9

And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moshe called Aharon and his sons, and the elders of Isra’el; 2and he said unto Aharon, Take thee a calf of the herd for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before Yehovah. 3And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying, Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both a year old, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; 4and an ox and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before Yehovah; and a meal-offering mingled with oil: for to-day Yehovah appeareth unto you. 5And they brought that which Moshe commanded before the tent of meeting: and all the congregation drew near and stood before Yehovah. 6And Moshe said, This is the thing which Yehovah commanded that ye should do: and the glory of Yehovah shall appear unto you. 7And Moshe said unto Aharon, Draw near unto the altar, and offer thy sin-offering, and thy burnt-offering, and make atonement for thyself, and for the people; and offer the oblation of the people, and make atonement for them; as Yehovah commanded.

8So Aharon drew near unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. 9And the sons of Aharon presented the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar: 10but the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul from the liver of the sin-offering, he burnt upon the altar; as Yehovah commanded Moshe. 11And the flesh and the skin he burnt with fire without the camp.

12And he slew the burnt-offering; and Aharon’s sons delivered unto him the blood, and he sprinkled it upon the altar round about. 13And they delivered the burnt-offering unto him, piece by piece, and the head: and he burnt them upon the altar. 14And he washed the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt-offering on the altar.

15And he presented the people’s oblation, and took the goat of the sin-offering which was for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first. 16And he presented the burnt-offering, and offered it according to the ordinance. 17And he presented the meal-offering, and filled his hand therefrom, and burnt it upon the altar, besides the burnt-offering of the morning. 18He slew also the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which was for the people: and Aharon’s sons delivered unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about, 19and the fat of the ox and of the ram, the fat tail, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul of the liver: 20and they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar: 21and the breasts and the right thigh Aharon waved for a wave-offering before Yehovah; as Moshe commanded.

22And Aharon lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings. 23And Moshe and Aharon went into the tent of meeting, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of Yehovah appeared unto all the people. 24And there came forth fire from before Yehovah, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat: and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

10 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aharon, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before Yehovah, which he had not commanded them. 2And there came forth fire from before Yehovah, and devoured them, and they died before Yehovah. 3Then Moshe said unto Aharon, This is it that Yehovah spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aharon held his peace. 4And Moshe called Misha’el and Eltzafan, the sons of Uzi’el the uncle of Aharon, and said unto them, Draw near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp. 5So they drew near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moshe had said. 6And Moshe said unto Aharon, and unto El’azar and unto Itamar, his sons, Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither rend your clothes; that ye die not, and that he be not wroth with all the congregation: but let your brethren, the whole house of Isra’el, bewail the burning which Yehovah hath kindled. 7And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of Yehovah is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moshe.

8And Yehovah spake unto Aharon, saying, 9Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations: 10and that ye may make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; 11and that ye may teach the children of Isra’el all the statutes which Yehovah hath spoken unto them by Moshe.

12And Moshe spake unto Aharon, and unto El’azar and unto Itamar, his sons that were left, Take the meal-offering that remaineth of the offerings of Yehovah made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy; 13and ye shall eat it in a holy place, because it is thy portion, and thy sons’ portion, of the offerings of Yehovah made by fire: for so I am commanded. 14And the wave-breast and the heave-thigh shall ye eat in a clean place, thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they are given as thy portion, and thy sons’ portion, out of the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the children of Isra’el. 15The heave-thigh and the wave-breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave-offering before Yehovah: and it shall be thine, and thy sons’ with thee, as a portion for ever; as Yehovah hath commanded.

16And Moshe diligently sought the goat of the sin-offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with El’azar and with Itamar, the sons of Aharon that were left, saying, 17Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin-offering in the place of the sanctuary, seeing it is most holy, and he hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Yehovah? 18Behold, the blood of it was not brought into the sanctuary within: ye should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded. 19And Aharon spake unto Moshe, Behold, this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before Yehovah; and there have befallen me such things as these: and if I had eaten the sin-offering to-day, would it have been well-pleasing in the sight of Yehovah? 20And when Moshe heard that, it was well-pleasing in his sight.

11 And Yehovah spake unto Moshe and to Aharon, saying unto them, 2Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the living things which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. 3Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat. 4Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that part the hoof: the camel, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 5And the coney, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 6And the hare, because she cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, she is unclean unto you. 7And the swine, because he parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, but cheweth not the cud, he is unclean unto you. 8Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you.

9These may ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, that may ye eat. 10And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are an abomination unto you, 11and they shall be an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in abomination. 12Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is an abomination unto you.

13And these ye shall have in abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the gier-eagle, and the ospray, 14and the kite, and the falcon after its kind, 15every raven after its kind, 16and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and the hawk after its kind, 17and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, 18and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the vulture, 19and the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

20All winged creeping things that go upon all fours are an abomination unto you. 21Yet these may ye eat of all winged creeping things that go upon all fours, which have legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth. 22Even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind. 23But all winged creeping things, which have four feet, are an abomination unto you.

24And by these ye shall become unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcass of them shall be unclean until the even; 25And whosoever beareth aught of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. 26Every beast which parteth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, is unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean. 27And whatsoever goeth upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcass shall be unclean until the even. 28And he that beareth the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.

29And these are they which are unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kind, 30and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon. 31These are they which are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even. 32And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean. 33And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall break. 34All food therein which may be eaten, that on which water cometh, shall be unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean. 35And every thing whereupon any part of their carcass falleth shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces: they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you. 36Nevertheless a fountain or a pit wherein is a gathering of water shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcass shall be unclean. 37And if aught of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean. 38But if water be put upon the seed, and aught of their carcass fall thereon, it is unclean unto you.

39And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even. 40And he that eateth of the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

41And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth is an abomination; it shall not be eaten. 42Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all fours, or whatsoever hath many feet, even all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination. 43Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby. 44For I am Jehovah your God: sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that moveth upon the earth. 45For I am Yehovah that brought you up out of the land of Mitsrayim, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

46This is the law of the beast, and of the bird, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth; 47to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.

PROPHETS | 2 SAM.6:1 - 7:17

6

And David again gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him, from Ba’alei-Y’hudah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, which is called by the Name, even the name of Yehovah-Tzva’ot that sitteth above the cherubim. 3And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Avinadav that was in the hill: and ‘Uzah and Achyo, the sons of Avinadav, drove the new cart. 4And they brought it out of the house of Avinadav, which was in the hill, with the ark of God: and Achyo went before the ark. 5And David and all the house of Israel played before Jehovah with all manner of instruments made of fir-wood, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with castanets, and with cymbals.

6And when they came to the threshing-floor of Nakhon, ‘Uzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen stumbled. 7And the anger of Yehovah was kindled against ‘Uzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. 8And David was displeased, because Yehovah had broken forth upon ‘Uzah; and he called that place Peretz-‘Uzah, unto this day. 9And David was afraid of Yehovah that day; and he said, How shall the ark of Yehovah come unto me? 10So David would not remove the ark of Yehovah unto him into the city of David; but David carried it aside into the house of Oved-edom the Gitti. 11And the ark of Yehovah remained in the house of Oved-edom the Gitti three months: and Yehovah blessed Oved-edom, and all his house.

12And it was told king David, saying, Yehovah hath blessed the house of ‘Oved-Edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Oved-Edom into the city of David with joy. 13And it was so, that, when they that bare the ark of Yehovah had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. 14And David danced before Yehovah with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. 15So David and all the house of Isra’el brought up the ark of Yehovah with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

16And it was so, as the ark of Yehovah came into the city of David, that Mikhal the daughter of Sha’ul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before Yehovah; and she despised him in her heart. 17And they brought in the ark of Yehovah, and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Yehovah. 18And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Jehovah of hosts. 19And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, both to men and women, to every one a cake of bread, and a portion of flesh, and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed every one to his house.

20Then David returned to bless his household. And Mikhal the daughter of Sha’ul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Isra’el to-day, who uncovered himself to-day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! 21And David said unto Mikhal, It was before Yehovah, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Yehovah, over Israel: therefore will I play before Yehovah. 22And I will be yet more vile than this, and will be base in mine own sight: but of the handmaids of whom thou hast spoken, of them shall I be had in honor. 23And Mikhal the daughter of Sha’ul had no child unto the day of her death.

7 And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Yehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about, 2that the king said unto Natan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. 3And Natan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thy heart; for Yehovah is with thee. 4And it came to pass the same night, that the word of Yehovah came unto Natan, saying, 5Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Yehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in? 6for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Mitsrayim, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a Tabernacle. 7In all places wherein I have walked with all the children of Isra’el, spake I a word with any of the tribes of Isra’el, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Isra’el, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar? 8Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Yehovah-Tzva’ot, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people, over Isra’el; 9and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth. 10And I will appoint a place for my people Isra’el, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first, 11and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Isra’el; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Yehovah telleth thee that Yehovah will make thee a house. 12When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; 15but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. 17According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Natan speak unto David.

GOSPEL | MT. 3:11-17

Matthew 3:11

I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Ruach HaKodesh and in fire: 12whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

13Then cometh Yeshua from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14But Yochanan would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15But Yeshua answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him. 16And Yeshua, when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him; 17and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

How Hard It Is to Obey

Like the reasoning of Nadab and Abihu, the Christian church offers “strange fire” by celebrating feasts not commanded by Yehovah and by teaching doctrines that contradict His Word.
