the beginning of everything
Scripture takes us to the origin of everything: the creation of heaven and earth, the order established by the word of Elohim, and the purpose of man from the beginning.

Read the Story as Told in Scripture
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3And ‘Elohim said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4And ‘Elohim saw the light, that it was good: and ‘Elohim divided the light from the darkness. 5And ‘Elohim called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
6And ‘Elohim said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7And ‘Elohim made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8And ‘Elohim called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
9And ‘Elohim said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10And ‘Elohim called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and ‘Elohim saw that it was good. 11And ‘Elohim said, Let the earth put forth grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit-trees bearing fruit after their kind, wherein is the seed thereof, upon the earth: and it was so. 12And the earth brought forth grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after their kind: and ‘Elohim saw that it was good. 13And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.
14And ‘Elohim said, Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years: 15and let them be for lights in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16And ‘Elohim made the two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17And ‘Elohim set them in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth, 18and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and ‘Elohim saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
20And ‘Elohim said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21And ‘Elohim created the great sea-monsters, and every living creature that moveth, wherewith the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind: and ‘Elohim saw that it was good. 22And ‘Elohim blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth. 23And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
24And ‘Elohim said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, cattle, and creeping things, and beasts of the earth after their kind: and it was so. 25And ‘Elohim made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the ground after its kind: and ‘Elohim saw that it was good. 26And ‘Elohim said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27And ‘Elohim created man in his own image, in the image of ‘Elohim created he him; male and female created he them. 28And ‘Elohim blessed them: and ‘Elohim said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29And ‘Elohim said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food: 30and to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for food: and it was so. 31And ‘Elohim saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
2 And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2And on the seventh day ‘Elohim finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3And ‘Elohim blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it he rested from all his work which ‘Elohim had created and made.
4These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yehovah ‘Elohim made earth and heaven. 5And no plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Yehovah ‘Elohim had not caused it to rain upon the earth: and there was not a man to till the ground; 6but there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7And Yehovah ‘Elohim formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8And Yehovah ‘Elohim planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9And out of the ground made Yehovah ‘Elohim to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became four heads. 11The name of the first is Pishon: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12and the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Cush. 14And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth in front of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15And Yehovah ‘Elohim took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 16And Yehovah ‘Elohim commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
18And Yehovah ‘Elohim said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him. 19And out of the ground Yehovah ‘Elohim formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens; and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them: and whatsoever the man called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help meet for him. 21And Yehovah ‘Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof: 22and the rib, which Yehovah ‘Elohim had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
3 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which Yehovah ‘Elohim had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden? 2And the woman said unto the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat: 3but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, ‘Elohim hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5for ‘Elohim doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as ‘Elohim, knowing good and evil. 6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. 7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8And they heard the voice of Yehovah ‘Elohim walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yehovah ‘Elohim amongst the trees of the garden.
9And Yehovah ‘Elohim called unto the man, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13And Yehovah ‘Elohim said unto the woman, What is this thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 14And Yehovah ‘Elohim said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, cursed art thou above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. 16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy pain and thy conception; in pain thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. 20And the man called his wife’s name Hava; because she was the mother of all living. 21And Yehovah ‘Elohim made for Adam and for his wife coats of skins, and clothed them.
22And Yehovah ‘Elohim said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever— 23therefore Yehovah ‘Elohim sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden the Cherubim, and the flame of a sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
4 And the man knew Hava his wife; and she conceived, and bare Kayin, and said, I have gotten a man with the help of Yehovah. 2And again she bare his brother Hevel. And Hevel was a keeper of sheep, but Kayin was a tiller of the ground. 3And in process of time it came to pass, that Kayin brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Yehovah. 4And Hevel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Yehovah had respect unto Hevel and to his offering: 5but unto Kayin and to his offering he had not respect. And Kayin was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6And Yehovah said unto Kayin, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee shall be its desire; but do thou rule over it. 8And Kayin told Hevel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Kayin rose up against Hevel his brother, and slew him.
9And Yehovah said unto Kayin, Where is Hevel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper? 10And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; 12when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth. 13And Kayin said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me. 15And Yehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Kayin, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Yehovah appointed a sign for Kayin, lest any finding him should smite him.
16And Kayin went out from the presence of Yehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 17And Kayin knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Hanokh: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Hanokh. 18And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mechuya’el; and Mechuya’el begat Metusha’el; and Metusha’el begat Lemekh. 19And Lemekh took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Tzilah. 20And Adah bare Yaval: he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle. 21And his brother’s name was Yuval: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe. 22And Tzilah, she also bare Tuval-Kayin, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron: and the sister of Tuval-Kayin was Na’amah. 23And Lemekh said unto his wives:
Adah and Tzilah, hear my voice;
Ye wives of Lemekh, hearken unto my speech:
For I have slain a man for wounding me,
And a young man for bruising me:
24If Kayin shall be avenged sevenfold,
Truly Lemekh seventy and sevenfold.
25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Shet: For, said she, ‘Elohim hath appointed me another seed instead of Hevel; for Kayin slew him. 26And to Shet, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of Yehovah.
5 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that ‘Elohim created man, in the likeness of ‘Elohim made he him; 2male and female created he them, and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 3And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Shet: 4and the days of Adam after he begat Shet were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters. 5And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.
6And Shet lived a hundred and five years, and begat Enosh: 7and Shet lived after he begat Enosh eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 8and all the days of Shet were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.
9And Enosh lived ninety years, and begat Kenan: 10and Enosh lived after he begat Kenan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11and all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years: and he died.
12And Kenan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalal’el: 13and Kenan lived after he begat Mahalal’el eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14and all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.
15And Mahalal’el lived sixty and five years, and begat Yered: 16and Mahalal’el lived after he begat Yered eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 17and all the days of Mahalal’el were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.
18And Yered lived a hundred sixty and two years, and begat Enoch: 19and Yered lived after he begat Hanokh eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 20and all the days of Yered were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.
21And Hanokh lived sixty and five years, and begat Metushelach: 22and Hanokh walked with Ha’Elohim after he begat Metushelach three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23and all the days of Hanokh were three hundred sixty and five years: 24and Hanokh walked with Ha’Elohim: and he was not; for ‘Elohim took him.
25And Metushelach lived a hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lemekh: 26and Metushelach lived after he begat Lemekh seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27and all the days of Metushelach were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.
28And Lemekh lived a hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29and he called his name Noach, saying, This same shall comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, which cometh because of the ground which Yehovah hath cursed. 30And Lemekh lived after he begat Noach five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: 31And all the days of Lemekh were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.
32And Noach was five hundred years old: and Noach begat Shem, Ham, and Yefet.
6 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born unto them, 2that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all that they chose. 3And Yehovah said, My Spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be a hundred and twenty years. 4The N’filim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them: the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown.
5And Yehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And it repented Yehovah that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7And Yehovah said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the ground; both man, and beast, and creeping things, and birds of the heavens; for it repenteth me that I have made them. 8But Noach found favor in the eyes of Yehovah.
Is. 42:5
5Thus saith Ha’El Yehovah, he that created the heavens, and stretched them forth; he that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6I, Yehovah, have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thy hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison-house. 8I am Yehovah, that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise unto graven images. 9Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.
10Sing unto Yehovah a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth; ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein, the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. 11Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit; let the inhabitants of Sela sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. 12Let them give glory unto Jehovah, and declare his praise in the islands. 13Yehovah will go forth as a mighty man; he will stir up his zeal like a man of war: he will cry, yea, he will shout aloud; he will do mightily against his enemies.
14I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry out like a travailing woman; I will gasp and pant together. 15I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and will dry up the pools. 16And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; in paths that they know not will I lead them; I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. These things will I do, and I will not forsake them. 17They shall be turned back, they shall be utterly put to shame, that trust in graven images, that say unto molten images, Ye are our gods.
18Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. 19Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I send? who is blind as he that is at peace with me, and blind as Yehovah’s servant? 20Thou seest many things, but thou observest not; his ears are open, but he heareth not. 21It pleased Yehovah, for his righteousness’ sake, to magnify the law, and make it honorable. 22But this is a people robbed and plundered; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison-houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.
23Who is there among you that will give ear to this? that will hearken and hear for the time to come? 24Who gave Ya’akov for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not Yehovah? he against whom we have sinned, and in whose ways they would not walk, neither were they obedient unto his law. 25Therefore he poured upon him the fierceness of his anger, and the strength of battle; and it set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
43 But now thus saith Yehovah that created thee, O Ya’akov, and he that formed thee, O Isra’el: Fear not, for I have redeemed thee; I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine. 2When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. 3For I am Yehovah thy God, the Holy One of Isra’el, thy Saviour; I have given Egypt as thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in thy stead. 4Since thou hast been precious in my sight, and honorable, and I have loved thee; therefore will I give men in thy stead, and peoples instead of thy life. 5Fear not; for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; 6I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back; bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the end of the earth; 7every one that is called by my name, and whom I have created for my glory, whom I have formed, yea, whom I have made.
8Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears. 9Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the peoples be assembled: who among them can declare this, and show us former things? let them bring their witnesses, that they may be justified; or let them hear, and say, It is truth. 10Ye are my witnesses, saith Yehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no god formed, neither shall there be after me.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not. 6There came a man, sent from God, whose name was Yochanan. 7The same came for witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him. 8He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness of the light. 9There was the true light, even the light which lighteth every man, coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not. 11He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not. 12But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth. 15John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me is become before me: for he was before me. 16For of his fulness we all received, and grace for grace. 17For the law was given through Moshe; grace and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah.

A Brief Insight
In the beginning, Elohim creates the heavens and the earth, bringing order out of chaos through His word. Light is separated from darkness, the skies from the waters, and the land is filled with vegetation and life. The sun, moon, and stars are appointed for signs and seasons. Living creatures fill the seas, the skies, and the land, each according to its kind. Humanity is created in the image of Elohim, given authority and responsibility over creation. The seventh day is set apart as a time of rest. The account continues with the formation of man, the garden prepared for him, and the command that establishes both freedom and responsibility before Elohim.
