Set Apart for Service and Faithfulness

From the priesthood to the common people, all were accountable before Elohim

A Brief Insight

Yehovah continues preparing the camp of Israel for its journey through the wilderness by establishing order, responsibility, and holiness among His people. The Levites receive specific duties in caring for and transporting the sacred furnishings of the Tabernacle, demonstrating that every role in the service of Elohim carries value and accountability. Instructions are also given concerning purity within the camp, restitution for wrongdoing, and the solemn procedure surrounding jealousy and suspected unfaithfulness in marriage, revealing Yehovah’s concern for justice, truth, and covenant integrity. The Nazirite vow illustrates voluntary dedication and separation unto Yehovah. Aharon and his sons are commanded to bless the people with words of peace and divine favor. The portion concludes with generous offerings from the tribal leaders for the dedication of the altar before Yehovah’s presence.

TORAH | NUM. 4:21 - 7:89

21And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 22Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ houses, by their families; 23from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to wait upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. 24This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens: 25they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of sealskin that is above upon it, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, 26and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatsoever shall be done with them: therein shall they serve. 27At the commandment of Aharon and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden, and in all their service; and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burden. 28This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aharon the priest.

29As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them by their families, by their fathers’ houses; 30from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth upon the service, to do the work of the tent of meeting. 31And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, 32and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall appoint the instruments of the charge of their burden. 33This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tent of meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aharon the priest.

34And Moshe and Aharon and the princes of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families, and by their fathers’ houses, 35from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting: 36and those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37These are they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered according to the commandment of Yehovah by Moshe.

38And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, their families, and by their fathers’ houses, 39from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting, 40even those that were numbered of them, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty. 41These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered according to the commandment of Yehovah.

42And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, 43from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting, 44even those that were numbered of them by their families, were three thousand and two hundred. 45These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered according to the commandment of Yehovah by Moshe.

46All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moshe and Aharon and the princes of Isra’el numbered, by their families, and by their fathers’ houses, 47from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered in to do the work of service, and the work of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, 48even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore. 49According to the commandment of Yehovah they were numbered by Moshe, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as Yehovah commanded Moshe.

5 And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 2Command the children of Isra’el, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is unclean by the dead: 3both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camp, in the midst whereof I dwell. 4And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp; as Yehovah spake unto Moshe, so did the children of Isra’el.

5And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 6Speak unto the children of Isra’el, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, so as to trespass against Yehovah, and that soul shall be guilty; 7then he shall confess his sin which he hath done: and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him in respect of whom he hath been guilty. 8But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made unto Yehovah shall be the priest’s; besides the ram of the atonement, whereby atonement shall be made for him. 9And every heave-offering of all the holy things of the children of Isra’el, which they present unto the priest, shall be his. 10And every man’s hallowed things shall be his: whatsoever any man giveth the priest, it shall be his.

11And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 12Speak unto the children of Isra’el, and say unto them, If any man’s wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, 13and a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, and she be not taken in the act; 14and the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: 15then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and shall bring her oblation for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is a meal-offering of jealousy, a meal-offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.

16And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before Yehovah: 17and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water. 18And the priest shall set the woman before Yehovah, and let the hair of the woman’s head go loose, and put the meal-offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal-offering of jealousy: and the priest shall have in his hand the water of bitterness that causeth the curse. 19And the priest shall cause her to swear, and shall say unto the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou have not gone aside to uncleanness, being under thy husband, be thou free from this water of bitterness that causeth the curse. 20But if thou have gone aside, being under thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee besides thy husband: 21then the priest shall cause the woman to swear with the oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, Yehovah make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when Yehovah doth make thy thigh to fall away, and thy body to swell; 22and this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, and make thy body to swell, and thy thigh to fall away. And the woman shall say, Amen, Amen.

23And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out into the water of bitterness: 24and he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that causeth the curse; and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her and become bitter. 25And the priest shall take the meal-offering of jealousy out of the woman’s hand, and shall wave the meal-offering before Yehovah, and bring it unto the altar: 26and the priest shall take a handful of the meal-offering, as the memorial thereof, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. 27And when he hath made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, if she be defiled, and have committed a trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her and become bitter, and her body shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. 28And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.

29This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, being under her husband, goeth aside, and is defiled; 30or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon a man, and he is jealous of his wife; then shall he set the woman before Yehovah, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law. 31And the man shall be free from iniquity, and that woman shall bear her iniquity.

6 And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 2Speak unto the children of Isra’el, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall make a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself unto Yehovah, 3he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or dried. 4All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the grape-vine, from the kernels even to the husk.

5All the days of his vow of separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in which he separateth himself unto Yehovah, he shall be holy; he shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

6All the days that he separateth himself unto Jehovah he shall not come near to a dead body. 7He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die; because his separation unto God is upon his head. 8All the days of his separation he is holy unto Yehovah.

9And if any man die very suddenly beside him, and he defile the head of his separation; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it. 10And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tent of meeting: 11and the priest shall offer one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering, and make atonement for him, for that he sinned by reason of the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day. 12And he shall separate unto Yehovah the days of his separation, and shall bring a he-lamb a year old for a trespass-offering; but the former days shall be void, because his separation was defiled.

13And this is the law of the Nazirite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tent of meeting: 14and he shall offer his oblation unto Yehovah, one he-lamb a year old without blemish for a burnt-offering, and one ewe-lamb a year old without blemish for a sin-offering, and one ram without blemish for peace-offerings, 15and a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and their meal-offering, and their drink-offerings. 16And the priest shall present them before Yehovah, and shall offer his sin-offering, and his burnt-offering: 17and he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto Yehovah, with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof. 18And the Nazirite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tent of meeting, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace-offerings. 19And the priest shall take the boiled shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazirite, after he hath shaven the head of his separation; 20and the priest shall wave them for a wave-offering before Yehovah; this is holy for the priest, together with the wave-breast and heave-thigh: and after that the Nazirite may drink wine.

21This is the law of the Nazirite who voweth, and of his oblation unto Yehovah for his separation, besides that which he is able to get: according to his vow which he voweth, so he must do after the law of his separation.

22And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 23Speak unto Aharon and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Isra’el: ye shall say unto them,

24Yehovah bless thee, and keep thee:

25Yehovah make his face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

26Yehovah lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

27So shall they put my name upon the children of Isra’el; and I will bless them.

7 And it came to pass on the day that Moshe had made an end of setting up the Tabernacle, and had anointed it and sanctified it, and all the furniture thereof, and the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them and sanctified them; 2that the princes of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ houses, offered. These were the princes of the tribes, these are they that were over them that were numbered: 3and they brought their oblation before Yehovah, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for every two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they presented them before the tabernacle. 4And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 5Take it of them, that they may be used in doing the service of the tent of meeting; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service. 6And Moshe took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites. 7Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service: 8and four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aharon the priest. 9But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none, because the service of the sanctuary belonged unto them; they bare it upon their shoulders. 10And the princes offered for the dedication of the altar in the day that it was anointed, even the princes offered their oblation before the altar. 11And Jehovah said unto Moshe, They shall offer their oblation, each prince on his day, for the dedication of the altar.

PROPHETS | JDG. 13:2-25

13:2

And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not. 3And the angel of Yehovah appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not; but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. 4Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: 5for, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. 6Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; and I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name: 7but he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb to the day of his death.

8Then Manoah entreated Yehovah, and said, Oh, Lord, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born. 9And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10And the woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day. 11And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. 12And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and how shall we do unto him? 13And the angel of Yehovah said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware. 14She may not eat of anything that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe.

15And Manoah said unto the angel of Yehovah, I pray thee, let us detain thee, that we may make ready a kid for thee. 16And the angel of Yehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto Yehovah. For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of Yehovah. 17And Manoah said unto the angel of Yehovah, What is thy name, that, when thy words come to pass, we may do thee honor? 18And the angel of Yehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful? 19So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and offered it upon the rock unto Yehovah: and the angel did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on. 20For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Yehovah ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground.

21But the angel of Yehovah did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Yehovah. 22And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. 23But his wife said unto him, If Yehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at our hand, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these. 24And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and Yehovah blessed him. 25And the Spirit of Yehovah began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

GOSPEL | LK. 1:11-20

11And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12And Z’kharyah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Z’kharyah: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16And many of the children of Isra’el shall he turn unto the Lord their God. 17And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him. 18And Z’kharyah said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gavri’el, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. 20And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

The Poison of Suspicion

For Yehovah, marriage is sacred ground. The ritual of jealousy practiced in ancient times teaches us that He abhors unfaithfulness, and that unfounded jealousy slowly consumes the peace of a home.

The Power and Depth of the Priestly Blessing

The Priestly Blessing was not merely an individual experience, but also an expression of unity and covenant identity within the community of Israel.
