Yehovah brings order to His people

In the wilderness, every tribe, family, and responsibility was arranged with purpose under His guidance and authority.

A Brief Insight

After leaving Mount Sinai, the children of Israel were organized and prepared for their journey toward the Promised Land. Yehovah commanded Moses to take a census of the men able to go to war, establishing the structure and responsibilities of each tribe. The camp was arranged with precision around the Tabernacle, showing that worship and the presence of Elohim were to remain at the center of the nation. The Levites were set apart for service to the Tabernacle and entrusted with its care during travel. Every family received a place, a task, and a purpose within the community. These instructions reveal that Yehovah is not the author of confusion but of order, holiness, and direction. His people were called to move together in unity under His guidance through the wilderness.

TORAH | NUM. 1:1 - 4:20

1 And Yehovah spake unto Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Isra’el, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, by their polls; 3from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Isra’el, thou and Aharon shall number them by their hosts. 4And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of his fathers’ house. 5And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you. Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur. 6Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 7Of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 8Of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar. 9Of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon. 10Of the children of Joseph: Of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud. Of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 11Of Benjamin: Abidan the son of Gideoni. 12Of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 13Of Asher: Pagiel the son of Ochran. 14Of Gad: Eliasaph the son of Deuel. 15Of Napthtali: Ahira the son of Enan. 16These are they that were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel. 17And Moses and Aaron took these men that are mentioned by name: 18And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19As Jehovah commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

20And the children of Re’uven, Israel’s first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 21those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Re’uven, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

22Of the children of Shim’on, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those that were numbered thereof, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 23those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Shim’on, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

24Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 25those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand and fifty.

26Of the children of Y’hudah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 27those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Y’hudah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

28Of the children of Yissakhar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 29those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Yissakhar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.

30Of the children of Z’vulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 31those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Z’vulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.

32Of the children of Yosef, namely the children of Efrayim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 33those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Efrayim, were forty thousand and five hundred.

34Of the children of M’nasheh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 35those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of M’nasheh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.

36Of the children of Binyamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 37those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Binyamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

38Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 39those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.

40Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 41those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.

42Of the children of Naftali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 43those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naftali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

44These are they that were numbered, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered, and the princes of Isra’el, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers’ house. 45So all they that were numbered of the children of Isra’el by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Isra’el; 46even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

47But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. 48For Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 49Only the tribe of Levi thou shall not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel; 50but appoint thou the Levites over the Tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it: they shall bear the Tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the Tabernacle. 51And when the Tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the Tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. 52And the children of Isra’el shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts. 53But the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Isra’el: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the Tabernacle of the testimony. 54Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that Yehovah commanded Moshe, so did they.

2 And Yehovah spake unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying, 2The children of Isra’el shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the ensigns of their fathers’ houses: over against the tent of meeting shall they encamp round about. 3And those that encamp on the east side toward the sunrising shall be they of the standard of the camp of Y’hudah, according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Y’hudah shall be Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 4And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred. 5And those that encamp next unto him shall be the tribe of Yissakhar: and the prince of the children of Yissakhar shall be Nethanel the son of Zuar. 6And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred. 7And the tribe of Z’vulun: and the prince of the children of Z’vulun shall be Eliab the son of Helon. 8And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred. 9All that were numbered of the camp of Y’hudah were a hundred thousand and fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred, according to their hosts. They shall set forth first.

10On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of R’uven according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of R’uven shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur. 11And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were forty and six thousand and five hundred. 12And those that encamp next unto him shall be the tribe of Shim’on: and the prince of the children of Shim’on shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 13And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred. 14And the tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaf the son of Reuel. 15And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty. 16All that were numbered of the camp of Reuben were a hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, according to their hosts. And they shall set forth second.

17Then the tent of meeting shall set forward, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place, by their standards.

18On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Efrayim according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Efrayim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud. 19And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred. 20And next unto him shall be the tribe of M’nasheh: and the prince of the children of M’nasheh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 21And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred. 22And the tribe of Binyamin: and the prince of the children of Binyamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni. 23And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred. 24All that were numbered of the camp of Efrayim were a hundred thousand and eight thousand and a hundred, according to their hosts. And they shall set forth third.

25On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred. 27And those that encamp next unto him shall be the tribe of Asher: and the prince of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ochran. 28And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and one thousand and five hundred. 29And the tribe of Naftali: and the prince of the children of Naftali shall be Ahira the son of Enan. 30And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred. 31All that were numbered of the camp of Dan were a hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred. They shall set forth hindmost by their standards.

32These are they that were numbered of the children of Isra’el by their fathers’ houses: all that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. 33But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Isra’el; as Yehovah commanded Moshe. 34Thus did the children of Isra’el; according to all that JehYehovahovah commanded Moshe, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set forward, every one by their families, according to their fathers’ houses.

3 Now these are the generations of Aharon and Moshe in the day that Yehovah spake with Moshe in mount Sinai. 2And these are the names of the sons of Aharon: Nadav the first-born, and Avihu, El’azar, and Itamar. 3These are the names of the sons of Aharon, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office. 4And Nadav and Avihu died before Yehovah, when they offered strange fire before Yehovah, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and El’azar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aharon their father.

5And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 6Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aharon the priest, that they may minister unto him. 7And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the Tabernacle. 8And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Isra’el, to do the service of the Tabernacle. 9And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aharon and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him on the behalf of the children of Isra’el. 10And thou shalt appoint Aharon and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

11And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 12And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Isra’el instead of all the first-born that openeth the womb among the children of Isra’el; and the Levites shall be mine: 13for all the first-born are mine; on the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Isra’el, both man and beast; mine they shall be: I am Yehovah.

14And Yehovah spake unto Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15Number the children of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them. 16And Moshe numbered them according to the word of Yehovah, as he was commanded. 17And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and K’hat, and M’rari. 18And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. 19And the sons of K’hat by their families: Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 20And the sons of M’rari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ houses.

21Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites: these are the families of the Gershonites. 22Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred. 23The families of the Gershonites shall encamp behind the Tabernacle westward. 24And the prince of the fathers’ house of the Gershonites shall be Elyasaf the son of Lael. 25And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting shall be the Tabernacle, and the Tent, the covering thereof, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, 26and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the Tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.

27And of K’hat was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites. 28According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary. 29The families of the sons of Kohath shall encamp on the side of the tabernacle southward. 30And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elitzafan the son of Uzi’el. 31And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the screen, and all the service thereof. 32And El’azar the son of Aharon the priest shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.

33Of M’rari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of M’rari. 34And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred. 35And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of M’rari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: they shall encamp on the side of the Tabernacle northward. 36And the appointed charge of the sons of M’rari shall be the boards of the Tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the instruments thereof, and all the service thereof, 37and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords.

38And those that encamp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, shall be Moshe, and Aharon and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Isra’el; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. 39All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered at the commandment of Yehovah, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.

40And Yehovah said unto Moshe, Number all the first-born males of the children of Isra’el from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. 41And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am Yehovah) instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Isra’el. 42And Moshe numbered, as Yehovah commanded him, all the first-born among the children of Isra’el. 43And all the first-born males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen.

44And Yehovah spake unto Moshe, saying, 45Take the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Isra’el, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am Yehovah. 46And for the redemption of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Isra’el, that are over and above the number of the Levites, 47thou shalt take five shekels apiece by the poll; after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs): 48and thou shalt give the money, wherewith the odd number of them is redeemed, unto Aharon and to his sons. 49And Moshe took the redemption-money from them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites; 50from the first-born of the children of Isra’el took he the money, a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary: 51and Moshe gave the redemption-money unto Aharon and to his sons, according to the word of Yehovah, as Yehovah commanded Moshe.

4 And Yehovah spake unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying, 2Take the sum of the sons of K’hat from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, 3from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. 4This is the service of the sons of K’hat in the tent of meeting, about the most holy things: 5when the camp setteth forward, Aharon shall go in, and his sons, and they shall take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it, 6and shall put thereon a covering of sealskin, and shall spread over it a cloth all of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof. 7And upon the table of showbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls and the cups wherewith to pour out; and the continual bread shall be thereon: 8and they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof. 9And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and its lamps, and its snuffers, and its snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it: 10and they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it upon the frame. 11And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof: 12and they shall take all the vessels of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of sealskin, and shall put them on the frame. 13And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon: 14and they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, the firepans, the flesh-hooks, and the shovels, and the basins, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof. 15And when Aharon and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is set forward; after that, the sons of K’hat shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of K’hat in the tent of meeting. 16And the charge of El’azar the son of Aharon the priest shall be the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the continual meal-offering, and the anointing oil, the charge of all the Tabernacle, and of all that therein is, the sanctuary, and the furniture thereof.

17And Yehovah spake unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying, 18Do not cut off the clan of K’hat from among the L’vi’im; 19but thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aharon and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden; 20but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.

PROPHETS | 1 SAM. 20:18-42

20:18

Then Y’honatan said unto him, tomorrow is Rosh-Hodesh: and thou wilt be missed, because thy seat will be empty. 19And when thou hast stayed three days, thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel. 20And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark. 21And, behold, I will send the lad, saying, Go, find the arrows. If I say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee; take them, and come; for there is peace to thee and no hurt, as Yehovah liveth. 22But if I say thus unto the boy, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way; for Yehovah hath sent thee away. 23And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, Yehovah is between thee and me for ever.

24So David hid himself in the field: and when the Rosh-Hodesh was come, the king sat him down to eat food. 25And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon the seat by the wall; and Y’honatan stood up, and Avner sat by Shaul’s side: but David’s place was empty. 26Nevertheless Shaul spake not anything that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean. 27And it came to pass on the morrow after the Rosh-Hodesh, which was the second day, that David’s place was empty: and Shaul said unto Y’honatan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Yishai to meat, neither yesterday, nor to-day? 28And Y’honatan answered Shaul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Beit-Lechem: 29and he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favor in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he is not come unto the king’s table.

30Then Shaul’s anger was kindled against Y’honatan, and he said unto him, Thou son of a perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Yishai to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mother’s nakedness? 31For as long as the son of Yishai liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. 32And Y’honatan answered Shaul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore should he be put to death? what hath he done? 33And Shaul cast his spear at him to smite him; whereby Y’honatan knew that it was determined of his father to put David to death. 34So Y’honatan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

35And it came to pass in the morning, that Y’honatan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him. 36And he said unto his lad, Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Y’honatan had shot, Y’honatan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee? 38And Y’onatan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Y’honatan’s lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master. 39But the lad knew not anything: only Y’honatan and David knew the matter. 40And Y’honatan gave his weapons unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city. 41And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the South, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. 42And Y’honatan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of Yehovah, saying, Yehovah shall be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed, for ever. And he arose and departed: and Y’honatan went into the city.

GOSPEL | MT. 24:29-36

29But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32Now from the fig tree learn her parable: when her branch is now become tender, and putteth forth its leaves, ye know that the summer is nigh; 33even so ye also, when ye see all these things, know ye that he is nigh, even at the doors. 34Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all these things be accomplished. 35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

36But of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only.
