The Yom Teruah Edition

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, you shall have a Sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. -Leviticus 23:24

Teruah means to make a loud noise, which is why Yom Teruah is also called the “Day of Trumpets” or even “Day of Shouting.” The Bible tells us it is a memorial of blowing of trumpets. The event this references is one we are told many times not to forget – the day the Almighty shouted down the 10 commandments to the people from atop Mount Sinai in the desert after delivering them from slavery in Egypt.

Take heed and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen… but teach them your sons, and your sons’ sons; especially the day that you stood before YHVH your God in Horeb, when YHVH said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children. And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness. And YHVH spoke to you out of the midst of the fire… –Deuteronomy 4:9-12

This event was so important that it was marked with extremely loud trumpets and the mighty voice of YHVH. He laid out his commandments for the people, and they agreed to follow them (Exodus 19 and 20). This is what we remember on Yom Teruah each year – this day of shouting, this day of announcement, this day the people witnessed YHVH’s power, authority and might.

In its intermediate fulfillment, Yom Teruah is the day the impending birth of the Messiah was announced by the Great Sign in Heaven in 3 BCE, and the day the Messiah taught on the Last Day and Resurrection to come in 27 CE.

Yom Teruah is the first fall feast. It marks the start of the fall feast season. This feast is the only one that falls on the first day of a Biblical month, which means we have to wait for the first sliver of the moon to be sighted – so we don’t know exactly when the feast will start! Because we don’t know for sure when the first sliver of the new moon will be sighted, we have to be completely ready for Yom Teruah before it comes. We don’t work on Yom Teruah, so we need to have the house clean, our clothes washed, and everything ready in anticipation of the arrival of this Holy Day. In the evening when Yom Teruah begins, the shofar is sounded to announce the start of the feast – all work stops and the celebration begins!

As we look to the future on Yom Teruah, we look forward to the return of our Messiah for his people. When we prepare for Yom Teruah, we think about preparing for our Messiah. We must be ready, clothes washed and hearts and minds prepared for his coming. Then we wait and watch for the signs of his return, just like we do for this feast day.

For the Messiah himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Messiah shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Messiah in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Messiah. – 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
